The CD Experiment
(or 'Good-bye Pere-Ubu!')
The background
The background on the experiment page is a color scanned image
of a CD which was "modified" using a standard household microwave.
The complete CD is shown below. This is a really fun experiment; for
best results, follow the the method that
Chris Gefriedes and
I developed below.
Microwave Cooking with CD's!
- Select a CD you really don't want to hear ever again.
- Place the CD read-side-up in the microwave.
- Adjust the power level to between 30 and 50%.
- If you can not adjust power, place a glass of water in the corner of
the microwave.
- Turn on the microwave and enjoy the special effects.
- The first thing you should see is a couple of isolated purple sparks.
- These will be followed by a beautiful wave of purple mesh which will
wash over the whole surface of the CD.
- Once the wave has finished, turn off the microwave or else the CD will
melt and stick to the inside of the cavity.
- If all goes well, you should see special effects which look like the
saucer portion of the Enterprise crashing through a Romulan force field at
warp 9!
